Imperial College is a part of the University of London, and is situated between the Albert Hall and the Science and Natural History museums in South Kensington. Fortunately the Royal College of Music is situated on the same site (in Prince Consort Road) and in the period of early tours to Budleigh Salterton was also part of “USK”, a loose amalgamation of student unions from local colleges. The operatic society (ICOS) was just one of many sports, cultural and hobby societies formed as part of the student union, and usually plying their wares and recruiting at the customary freshers fair held in the first week of a new university year. The society traditionally produced two main shows a year, one at college (on the Union Building stage) in early spring and one on tour, which became focussed on Budleigh from 1968. IC being almost 100% male dominated back then led ICOS to recruit heavily from the obvious talent available from the RCM, and also the Royal Academy, L’Institute Francais and Maria Assumpta Colleges. The result was almost professional standard shows, with many of our principal singers going on to professional careers |
