After retirement Michael returned to his native Portrush but began to feel rather isolated there. He wrote on one occasion: “..... so sorry that I haven't been in touch for ages. There are so many people I've fallen out of touch with. I feel incredibly inadequate. But I care about all my ICOS/IO friends very, very much, and think about them a lot, even if I'm not in touch.” He passed away in 2016. In February 2017 his friends organised a memorial event in the Mary Wallace Theatre in Twickenham where for decades he had been active as a member of Richmond Shakespeare Society. ICOS was represented by Ellis Pike, Roger Nicholls, Deborah Miles-Johnson and Bill White with Selwyn Tillett as accompanist. and Ed Mulligan as cameraman.  The video which follows records our tribute to Michael.
